Superman Day at the World’s Fair – borrowed liberally from the great blog THE KANDOR ARCHIVES – so if you want the full story head over there- I’m just going to hit some highlights.
July 3, 1940 Superman had been around for about two years and National Comics (now DC) pushed hard to get the character out in front of crowds. THE ADVENTURES OF SUPERMAN Radio Show made it’s debut back in February the same year so it’s very likely the Mutual Network had more than a few hands in this idea.

Notice the lace boots? That’s how Superman’s boots first appeared in the comics. The emblem with the black background was an interesting choice–I thought it first appeared in the Fleischer Bros Superman Cartoons but those didn’t come out for another year, although they were announced during this time.

The crowds turned out and they had contests including feats of strength to pick Superboy and Supergirl out of the crowd– Charles Atlas was there and so was lion tamer and adventurer Frank Buck.
