Men Don’t Run in the Rain

If you click on my Friends link you’ll see THE ART OF MANLINESS as one of the links- I’ve been a fan of the books and the website (and the podcast– probably the only podcast I listen to) not because it’s taught me a lot but it reiterates and validates a lot of opinions I’ve forged over many years.

What’s the reason Men Don’t Run in the Rain? Well in the self-titled book it’s because you should not panic over such a minor thing as rain– even a downpour. You should remain in control, you set an example for the people around you, you give them a sense of stability.

The reason I’ve always adhered to this is simple- you get just as wet running from point A to point B and if you run there’s a pretty good chance;

  • You look like a damn fool.
  • You can slip and fall and now you’re really in trouble.
  • Panic is never an option.

It’s a good book– it gets into a lot of things. The site itself offers a lot of things for pondering– one of the most impressive articles is why do men dress like boys now?

That’s struck me quite often, I’ve written about it in the past– I don’t fly in sweatpants and a graphic tee-shirt– I’ve never worn a graphic tee-shirt, even as a child, I know most people don’t believe this but go ahead and ask my mom. I’ve always hated the look. I do have a long sleeve YALE T-Shirt (and since I’ve taken classes there I think I’ve earned it) and I have a sleeping shirt from Cliff House in Maine because it might be the most comfortable shirt I’ve ever worn.

Apparently sometime in the span between the 60s and the 00s the idea of men hitting a rite of passage and dressing differently from a boy melted away.

The site points out when you dress like a grown up you get treated like one. I can completely swear to this. I see it first hand.

Anyway, check out the site in the links and see what you think.
