We’ve been working a lot on Weekends, this particular Saturday we decided to take the daylight hours off. We started with a trip to Donut Kitchen in Holden where I got one of the best breakfast sandwiches anywhere as well as a bagful of donuts for Sunday morning. I don’t know why anyone goes to the nearby Dunkin’ for stale donuts and bad coffee when this place is just across the street.
From there we headed into Holden Days — which would be more accuratly called Holden Day since it’s only one day. They setup a fair of sorts with tables and vendors and crafters– they also have Holden Police and Fire with some fun tables. We swung by the Holden Democrat Party table which was in disarray and featured a cardboard cutout of Bernie Sanders– I think it’s funny they had this, because it was not a flattering pic of Bernie– he was wrapped in blankets and a mask while he was OUTSIDE- and I’m pretty sure in 2016 Bernie had the nomination locked down and the party decided to knock him over and insert their preferred candidate. They did the same thing in 2024 when they inserted a candidate who hadn’t won a single primary vote– a candidate who didn’t do very well when they ran in 2020, dropping out in the first or second round, but whatever, the booth reflected the chaos of those two elections.
The Republican Party booth was a lot more orderly, and I talked to them for about fifteen minutes- nice people, and I respect both booths because it takes work to get out there for your beliefs.
I picked up a mini rubber Jesus figure from the Church in the center of town– as the little header card said “We all need a little Jesus with us”.
There was a lot of talent at the show– especially the musicians. We had parked about 1.5 miles away– I should have gone with my original plan and just parked down by the post office rather than trying to get near the library– but as we walked towards town we were lucky enough to encounter a kid band playing drums and electric guitars in their driveway. They were very good and they were probably eleven. You know how rare it is to get a kid to do something like join a band??
We jumped on the trolley in an effort to get closer to our parking spot but that didn’t work out– as is usually the case the weather was a bit warmer than they had predicted and we were getting pretty tired.
We took the car to the top of Mount Wachusett and spent a half hour or so enjoying the view from the top. It was slightly hazy but we could see Boston in the distance.
On the way down we stopped at a Mountain Cafe which was built into an old colonial house. There were a lot of people sitting outside in the sun, but this was the type of place where you ordered at the counter and then they called your name, so you self served yourself and we opted to grab a table inside. We each got a BLT– hers with Avacodo mine without–on some amazing multi grain bread. THIS was a BLT– Via should come up here and take a look at what a BLT is supposed to be.
We remarked that $15 for a BLT was a bit pricey but this is just how things have gotten– eating out ain’t cheap.
We hit Vincent’s Supermarket in Westminster on the way home so I could grab some decent half and half for the morning coffee (I accidently bought Fat Free Half and Half from Stop and Shop and it’s like pouring milk and water into your coffee). Vincent’s is a really cool old school market– I think they call themselves a General Store but it’s a bit bigger than that. At the top of the freezer and dairy aisle’s they have a neat display of vintage bicycles and old timey ride on toys. Really nice selection it reminded me of Gateway Market in Des Moines IA.
We got home, did some work for our projects and then opted to head out to Tony’s in Sutton for the Grilled Chicken Salad and then over to Target (this is my third weekend in a row going to Target– that’s more than I’ve done in my whole life) and to ULTA Beauty which is a makeup store that Veronica must own stock in.
A beautiful night ride home with the top down we made a quick pitstop at Big Y in the City to grab another container of CRAVE’N Death by Chocolate Ice Cream which is the best ice cream I’ve ever had.
A really nice Saturday.
