We didn’t have a lot to do the Saturday of Labor Day Weekend so we decided to head out to Knotty Pines Collectibles- a co-op of antique dealers in Hudson MA– our sons who run ROBO PICTO (it’s in the links) have a setup there and we went out to check it out.
After that we decided to walk Hudson Main Street which has a lot of nice little shops (and plenty of places to eat). We stopped in a neat little book store and record shop where I picked up a great multi disc Charlies Mingus set. We stopped in a guitar store where I almost bought an absolutely beautiful electric guitar. Then down the block a ways was JR’S SPOOKY SHACK which was a great horror themed shop stocked with classic and modern horror film merchandise. I love horror fans who appreciate the classics– playing on the big screen TV was 1935’s BRIDE OF FRANKENSTEIN– one of my all time favorites–it’s more a black comedy than a horror film, but it’s loaded with great characters. It brought me back to a nice memory from a few years ago…
One Foggy Halloween Eve night Veronica and I were walking through some of the darker streets of Salem MA, she spotted a clothing store she wanted to visit and I said I’d meet her “down the street” which meant absolutely nothing because I had no idea what was down there.
Walking a bit aimlessly and honestly the chill damp air was making me tired, I came across a warmly lit bookstore that had a TV in the window- and they too were playing BRIDE. This was one of those bookstores you can only imagine- tall ceilings with books lined on beautiful carved wood shelves, thick rich carpets scattered on stunning wood floors. Spacious without looking empty, stocked but not hoarder style. Really beaitufl and inside there was a fireplace and another TV above it– the owner saw me watching from the window came out and lead me inside to a very comfortable high back leather chair and even brought me a cup of hot cider while I watched the rest of the movie. It was a very welcoming greeting for someone who was a bit weary.
After about 45 minutes my absolutely gorgeous wife (sorry fellas not bragging just telling the truth) came walking in with a huge smile– she knew I had found my place.
I hope I spent a huge amount at this store, I honestly can’t remember, but I’ve vowed to go back and find this store again (hopefully it survived the nonsense of shutting down people’s businesses during the pandemic) and rectify that.
Great memory.
