The Internet is a Vile and Horrid Place

Is that news? I feel that way and I don’t even have Facebook! The internet is quite a thing- it feels like it’s been around forever doesn’t it? While there are some good things about the ‘net I would say that 90% of it is wretched cesspool like meanderings filled with time wasting doom scrolling. Sure, I’ll scroll through Instagram and watch funny dog videos, I recently saw one that demonstrates how clumsy Panda Bears are– and it made me laugh. Is it worse than sitting in front of the boob tube and watching the mindless drek that most sitcoms always have been? Frasier is a popular program that won countless awards– I’ve seen about a dozen episodes and each and everyone is what I would dub the dazed and confused pattern– some character misunderstanding leads to hilarity. OK.

That’s not to say there aren’t shows that are actually pretty clever– GOLDEN GIRLS is a good solid show but even then you sort of hit auto pilot and the story writes itself.

But even the worst boob tube program wasn’t filled with people who back in the 70s would be standing at the entrance of an alley shouting nonsense at passerby, and no one paid attention and merely waited for the paddy wagon to show up and cart them away. Today those same crazies are given a megaphone and a platform and the 24 hour news cycle encourages a focus on non-stories and things to get your blood boiling.

I’d implore you to put your phone down and talk to your family. Play a board game, read a book, but put your phone down and resist the doom scrolling.

Those pandas are going to get hurt whether we watch them or not.
