Basil Rathbone played Sherlock Holmes in 14 films from 1939-1946 the first two as period pieces for 20TH Century Fox and the remaining twelve as contemporary World War II films for Universal. He also played Holmes on the Radio for many years so for a lot of folks, myself included, he’s one of the best actors to nail the character (Jeremy Brett is the best, Benedict Cumberbatch and Robert Downey Jr aren’t even close).
Since it’s Halloween Season I thought it deserved mentioning that there are four films from the Universal series that could stand with their monster pictures released around the same time.
- SHERLOCK HOLMES FACES DEATH (1943) Holmes partner John Watson (Nigel Bruce who played Watson through all the films and the radio shows) is serving for a convalescent home with a sinister undertow– based on the spookiest of the original novels, The Musgrave Ritual.
- THE SPIDER WOMAN (1943) There was a plan to have actress Gale Sondergaard play this villainous role in a number of films– and they wanted to introduce her in the Holmes series to give it a good start, but it was never to be and there was only one more film to feature the character in 1946. But it’s a doozy.
- THE SCARLET CLAW (1944) Holmes finds himself in Canada in a small fishing village trying to unravel the mystery of a glowing murderous creature roaming the land and claiming several victims.
- THE PEARL OF DEATH (1944) Rondo Hatton played “the Creeper” in a series of films and he makes a cameo here as the assassin for the lead villain– closest we come to a real monster in the series.
- THE HOUSE OF FEAR (1945) A group of friends all decide to move into a large mansion together to save expenses, then they start dying off– bringing in Holmes and Watson to figure it out. There’s a real air of menace to this one.
