We had an ongoing debate in the week leading up to Halloween regarding how much candy we needed, our weather apps were both calling for a comfortable dry night– but Jim over on the weather channel kept saying something different, Hurricane Melissa, which by the time it hit us would be Tropical Storm Melissa, was going to come trick or treating with wind and rain.
So, we cheaped out a little bit on the candy. In our ten years here we’ve had every kind of Halloween weather you can imagine; Mostly nice, and on those nights it wasn’t unheard of to get 100-125 trick or treaters. One year we got measurable snow– and I think it was more than 6″ and another we got wet cold rain and for both of those we got no more than 5 diehard candy wanters. I don’t like having a mass of Halloween candy lying around, because I’ll eat it even though I don’t like candy.
The night arrived and darkness grew while things got a little drizzly with some crazy winds– but still the crowds came and by the time the show had ended at 8pm we were down to a handful of candy left.
Next year, I’ll likely resume my normal order of 6-8 bags of candy– I refuse to being the guy who puts ONE piece of candy in a kid’s halloween bag, especially since those “bite size” candies have gotten ridiculously small.
The real horror this week is the concept of Mamdami getting in as Mayor of New York. I’m not sure what your personal opinion of these big US Cities are, depending on your news source they are either 70s style hell holes or they are golden utopia’s with a plummeting crime rate.
I can tell you as someone whose boots are on the ground that SOME of them are absolute hell holes– and the ones who are at the worst levels all say the same thing “Well, that’s just how it is in a big city.”
No. No it’s not.
There are plenty of city’s in the US who are completely walkable, safe and don’t feature junkie’s sprawled out on the sidewalk.
New York has been in a decline since Mayor Bloomberg left, soft on crime policies and cashless bails have empowered small time criminals who affect daily quality of life. New York as it is RIGHT NOW is unsafe in many areas. It’s about to get worse.
Mamdami will be soft on crime. His experience is a joke. His concepts won’t work. Running New York City is the equivalent of being Governor of a State because you’re overseeing 8.5 million people. His policies will drive businesses out, will turn it into the Charles Bronson version of New York in films like DEATH WISH. Why? Because Socialism doesn’t work.
“The problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people’s money,” — Margaret Thatcher
In talking to a friend who lives there, who has a car service, who never takes the subway and never goes anywhere but gallery openings and cocktail parties, and he said he was going to vote for Mamdami because his company is overseas, his policies won’t effect him, and if they end up working and poor people get free rent and free buses then he’ll feel good about his vote.
Amazing.
Now friends, THAT kind of thinking is scary.
