Batman came to be in May of 1939 and four years later in 1943 he first appeared on movie screens, his second appearance was six years later in 1949 and then we didn’t see him again until almost 20 years later in BATMAN THE MOVIE (1966) which was based on the popular TV Series at the time. Now I’m not talking about TV Series or Radio shows because if we go there we barely have a time when there isn’t some kind of Batman series being produced and broadcast somewhere.
Twenty three years after the Adam West movie we got Michael Keaton in Tim Burton’s BATMAN (1989) which introduced the concept of a dark and scary Batman in a rubber suit. A sequel followed that blockbuster just two years later and then three years later and ending the run in 1998 with BATMAN AND ROBIN starring George Clooney that effectively killed the series.
About ten years later Christopher Nolan rebooted the character with Christian Bale in a three film series that ran through ten or so years. Then Bobby Pattison took on the role in Matt Reeves THE BATMAN which purported to make Batman more like the detective he sometimes is in the comic books.
That doesn’t include Ben Affleck’s run as Batman in various team up films DC/Warner Bros did including BATMAN VS SUPERMAN which might have been the dumbest movie I’ve seen in a long long time.
It’s a lot of overkill and that’s coming from a guy who has three Batman Cowls (different versions) in his art studio. My favorite version of Batman is the first one in 1943, then the 1966 one and from there probably 2005’s THE DARK KNIGHT because of Heath Ledger’s performance as The Joker which is absolutely brilliant.
I hated Matt Reeves THE BATMAN, and even more I hated Bobby (Twinkly Vampire) Pattison’s whiney crying version of Bruce Wayne/Batman. I HATED IT. The movie bored me to tears (my mascara was running just like Bobby’s was) and I would have walked out had I not been there with a group of seven friends.
Now they’re doing another version of Batman for the DCU under James Gunn AND a sequel to Matt Reeves THE BATMAN with a returning Bobby P. I think my biggest problem with Reeves THE BATMAN was the script and the casting of Bobby. If he’d gone with someone like Josh Brolin I would have been excited to see it. In my mind Batman, like Superman and James Bond can’t be in their twenties or early thirties because at that time they were still learning their respective “crafts” and earning their stripes.
Pattison seemed like a skinny emo kid playing dress up. But maybe my problem isn’t with Bobby so much, maybe I’m just sick of movie Batmen.
