Resolutions

I love the AI illustration– am I having a stroke? What day is it?

Ah the New Year Resolution! Motivation to start something again– the average Resolution petters to an end and dies around January 27th. I was struck by it being January 2nd recently racing down Rt 146 heading to Tony’s to pick up a Hot Pastrami to go– the ANYTIME FITNESS ™ parking lot nearby was overflowing– go get ’em resolutionaries!

I don’t make New Year Resolutions. I do make some self evaluations and decide to make some small changes but the calendar is not going to dictate a sudden desire to stop bad habits or start good ones.

One of the things you have to do is start change slowly, and then make it routine, drag yourself to it even when it’s the last thing you want to do. I had a good friend who decided he needed to lose some weight– and it’s enough weight that he needed to be under a doctor’s care– he went nuts at the gym– going twice a day which is ridiculous because your body and your muscles need to rest between workouts. This friend made great progress, and lost something like 60lbs but then the saddest thing happened, people started to tell him how good he looked and he backed way off, eventually coming to a stop.

Gradual is better.

But do what actually works. If this is your fifth year in a row of resolutions and you’re not making it into the Summer with this new motivation re-evaluate rather than resolute.
