To Kindle or Not to Kindle?

I’ve got three iPads and a Kindle Fire reader. I don’t travel with the iPads and I’ve got the Kindle setup so that I ONLY use it to read books. That will give it less distractions.

When I first got an iPad I tried using iBooks but the ease of accessing the internet and all of that nonsense out there did not lead to productive periods of reading.

As a very young man I used to fly back and forth between Boston and Portland Oregon quite a bit and I’d always bring TWO books with me- one for each leg of the trip. While I was in Oregon my famiily there would set up my guest room in their Library so there would be no shortage of things to read while I was there.

Never once did I open my book on the plane and think- man, wouldn’t it be great if I had a device that could hold 1000 books on it? Never once. I did imagine the joy of an MP3 player so I could have a playlist with more than 18 songs on it– but the thought of having multiple books available during my trip was soemthing that never even entered my tiny head.

Because that’s the problem with a Kindle or any other electronic reader– too many choices. If I’m even the slightest bit bored with what I’m reading it’s way too easy to just jump over to something “better”.

Compare that to a physical book– I still read those and you know what? I manage to finish them without any struggle at all.
