I used to commute to East Longmeadow, and I had to be in by 6am so with Mass Pike Traffic I often had to be on the road by 430 to make sure I was there on time. I remember one time heading in– and my job at the time was Recieving at a Grocery Store so I was able to dress pretty scrubby because my time was spent unseen in the backroom as I simply checked vendors in as they brought in product.
On particularly snowy commute I pulled into a diner for a hot cup of coffee and a breakfast sandwich, while I waited for my order to go the guys sitting at the counter next me asked what I was hauling.
“Myself.”
They laughed because they didn’t think “civilians” were on the road that early.
I tell you this story because one of the way I’d make that often times 90 minute commute very bearable was Old Time Radio– back in those days we had a car with a cassette player and I’d be able to listen to three episodes of a show each way.
I’m not sure why I like Old Time Radio so much but I absolutely cannot get into Audio Books– I really hate being read to– and OTR has a full cast so it’s more of a performance.
Today I work from home but I still have to entertain myself and sometimes I put on an OTR playlist to kill some time. There are tons of sites I’d recommend if you want to give them a try;
OLD TIME RADIO – in case you don’t want to pick, like a broadcaster they choose what you’re going to listen to.
OLD RADIO WORLD – Free Old Time Radio Shows– they have a good selection.
Really just do a Google Search and you’ll find a lot of choices. There are also several online sellers who offer them on MP3 CD’s or as digital downloads– usually $5 for several hundred episodes.
And if you aren’t sure what kind of old time radio you might like here are a few recommendations there too.
