It Gets Cold in Florida

We started the day meeting clients at the OAX Comic Art Show which was being held at our hotel. I had the opportunity to chat with OAX Honcho Bill Cox and he was gracious enough to give me a pass for the show.

I was able to talk to a few of the artists there and pick up some great art, but we were due to check in at our next spot which was the Coronado Springs Resort at Disney.

The resorts, and I’ve seen pretty much all of them, are beautiful, and you cannot argue with the service which is beyond top notch. The Coronado is definitely a favorite of mine. It’s Spain themed so the “mascot” for the resort seems to be the Day of the Dead movie Pixar made and the Three Caballeros classic cartoon. The resorts are not cheesy– in fact my second favorite one, Animal Kingdom is anything but offering authentic African artifacts in the lobby museum. We arrived at about Noon with the plan to drop off our bag, check in wasn’t until four so we planned on dropping our bags with the Concierge but the room was ready to go.

We headed over to the Polynesian Resort where Trader Sam’s a really fun Tiki bar exists, last year we waited three hours to get in but then we had to leave for our dinner reservations so we missed out. We decided to try again and this time after about a 90 minute wait we were able to get in.

Trader Sams is built like a real Tiki Bar you’d find in the South Pacific– and at this place as you order certain drinks like the Krakatoa I ordered above not only does it come “lava style” it also triggers things in the wall to activate, in this case a roaring volcano on the wall.

We explored the resort, which is massive before heading down to Disney Springs where we had reservations at The Summer House on the Lake, which was exceptional although surprisingly casual considering the Southern Plantation style of the place which definitely felt upscale. There was a huge line for their cookie shop– which offered giant warm cookies of all varieties. Good Hack here– you can order any or all of these cookies from your table and they’ll be served warm and you avoid that 45 minute wait.

It was a late-ish dinner so I opted to skip Coffee– even though most of the time coffee has no affect on my sleep but traveling often throws my sleep habits into chaos and I didn’t want to chance it. I ended up saving ¾ of my giant cookie for morning coffee in the room.

The walk back from the restaurant to the Resort Shuttle was absolutely freezing– I was wearing only a linen polo shirt and it had dropped from the 80s during the day to into the low 40s. So cold in fact that I ran into the Lacoste Store in Disney Springs and contemplated buying a $300 windbreaker–two problems- I don’t wear windbreakers and my suitcase was already so full I would not be able to pack it.

It was back into the cold where Veronica did her best to keep me from dying, thankfully it was a quick ride back to our room.
