OMAHA STEAKS - A Review

I decided to try Omaha Steaks so I put together a package that included mostly steaks— I don’t eat Pork Chops so I avoided packages with those, but I did try the hot dogs, chicken, shrimp and the Pub Style Cod Fillets too.
The order arrives pretty quickly— about 3-4 days and it comes in a giant styrofoam cooler— about the size of a commercial cooler. I’ll get into it but I think a lot of people struggle with the cooler part of the deal because the website has helpful suggestions as to what you can do with this cooler— and the others you pile up if you continue to order.
Some of the more creative; use as a file cabinet for all your important documents. Make a snow house out of them in the winter (not sure I didn’t make that one up) and my favorite - use as a cooler for picnics and parties. Number Two son and i came up with the brilliant thought to bring these to a friends house for a party filled with ice and drinks and then make sure two things; 1- nobody sees you bring it in and 2- you leave without it so now your friend has to decide if he is going to file his tax returns in it or make a snow house.
It’s all packed in dry ice, which is itself something you don’t mess with so read the opening instructions carefully. The meats are packed in wide flat boxes that stack up in your freezer pretty easily but be warned one “regular” order fills up your entire freezer.
The chicken was very good, better than store brand chicken, the burgers were solid (although a little thin), the hot dogs were good but a little big, I really dug the shrimp and the cod but the clear winner is the steaks— they really are well selected and I’d advise cooking from the freezer.
Heat your pan on high, throw a little dab of butter or olive oil in it— let the pan get good and hot but be careful the butter doesn’t burn, then drop the frozen steaks in and cook 3-4 mins per side, season as you go (I recommend Gibsons ™ Steak Seasoning available on Amazon) and you’ll have perfect medium rare steaks, just make sure you let them rest for 2-3 minutes—a very important part of the cooking process for steaks.
I liked my order enough that once I was down to the last box I placed another order. The styrofoam cooler disposal is enough of an issue that I won’t order more than a couple of times a year— and price wise you’re getting top quality but you’re paying for it too— you could do just as well if you have a local butcher and you don’t buy your meat from a chain supermarket.
So I’d recommend the service if budget isn’t a big issue for you and you want quality protein.
