It's Andy Fish!

That question came in, I’ve seen a LOT of movies, I studied films in art school, I’ve taught film classes at WAM, so yeah I’ve seen a lot. Unfortunately I’d have to get more of a definitive “Worst” before I can really give you one movie.

Worst as in Boring? Boring your audience is the absolute biggest crime you can commit as a film maker, and different folks have different levels of patience. It’s also not quite fair the way we now have home video because you are able to commit the two cardinal sins of an audience;

1- Fast Forward. Nope, don’t do that. It’s unfair to the film maker and you might have missed something incredibly important to the plot.

2- Not pay attention to the film. I won’t judge a film at all if I “watched it” while I worked on my laptop, was drawing a page or any other distraction that took a part of my attention away. That’s not fair either.

Worst as in being unwatchable? Andy Warhol is a director who I believe makes completely unwatchable films. I once went to an Andy Warhol Double Feature and somehow I walked out on both films! How did I do that? Does that mean I went back in for the second feature after watching the first? I guess I did, but I found the two films so repulsive I left.

Boring? Wow there’s a lot. As I’ve said before pretty much ANY MGM Film from 1930 – 1975 is going to fall under the lavish big budget incredibly slow paced boring spectacle.

Now some films are slow– that’s different. SEVEN SAMURAI or almost any film by Akira Kurosawa is going to have a slow pace. He’s an artist, and you know that going in.

I don’t love films that spend hours establishing the hell out of itself, Christopher Nolan and Peter Jackson spend about 20 minutes in each film giving us panoramic shots of where ever we are, please cut them down.

But the biggest loser of all time was Jim Carrey’s THE GRINCH– they took a 22 minute classic cartoon and stretched it out to a 2 plus hour feature– there was not enough story and way too much Carrey. I think I fell asleep four times during that film.

Don’t get me wrong I love a good nap as much as the next fella, but I don’t like paying $40 plus popcorn for the ability to nap.

Everyone thinks they’re classics but I find BLADE RUNNER a little slow, but Harrison Ford is a terrible actor so that might be the reason there, and 2001: A SPACE ODDYSEY although I finally watched that fully caffienated and made it through without snoozing and I’ll say this– Kubrick has some strange ideas.

How about you all? Worst movie of all time? I’m sure I’ll agree because I think Hollywood puts out a 85/15% of bad vs good films.
