NEW OFFICE CHAIR
This isn’t the exact chair, but you get the idea, right?
Saturday we decided to head out when the weather was nice so we popped the top on the convertible and headed out to get some milk and groceries— we opted to head to Roche Bros in Westboro because that is one of the markets I think are beautifully run, clean, continue to have samples (like Goretti’s) and is an absolute pleasure to shop at.
As with most missions of this type we got side-tracked and stopped at Tatnuck Booksellers first. When this store was in Worcester it was one of my favorite book shops— in fact it’s rare for me to walk out of a bookstore empty handed (I love books), but this place for some reason never seems to have anything that piques my interest— this time I did find a book and we decided to walk around the corner to HomeGoods or HomeStuff or whatever that TJ Maxx store is that sells furniture and exotic groceries only to find it vacant. Not wanting to waste the walk we continued on to Staples ™ which is not the most exciting store on Earth but as an artist sometimes I can find some neat supplies, and since it was tax time I thought maybe I could buy some folders. Well I walked around and around the store and decided to take a seat in the Office Chair area so I plunked myself down in what had to have been the most comfortable office chair I’d ever sat in.
I looked at the price tag— $526 on sale for $219 - that seemed like a deal. I then hurriedly looked around for Veronica and dragged her to the back and had her check it out— I needed her opinion— do I need a new office chair? She’s great at cutting to the chase and she can talk me into or out of any purchase in under two seconds.
She agreed it was a nice chair, but she tried another one— a brown one I hadn’t seen— and it was even better and the same price. Only trouble was we had the Miata and the box that this came in likely wouldn’t fit in even our other full size car.
I texted Number Two son who has a pretty good sized SUV to see if he was available for a pickup the next day, then I sought out the manager and we began our attempt to communicate like two people speaking the same language;
ME: I was wondering if I can buy a chair today and pick it up tomorrow?
THEM: You can’t take it with you today?
ME: No. I have a two seater Miata, it likely wouldn’t fit even if I left my wife here.
THEM: It might fit— how big is the back seat? Do the back doors open wide?
ME: No. There is no back seat, there are no back doors, I have a two seater Miata.
THEM: Oh. We can ship it to you for free.
ME: Great! Let’s do that!
I started to text Number Two son to disregard the pickup request.
THEM: Oh wait- it’s out of stock online. We can’t ship it.
Now I’m not sure how he did this. He seemed to have gotten the message that it wasn’t in stock somehow in his mind. Do they do implants in Staples ™ Employees?
ME: Okay, so can I pay for it today and pick it up tomorrow?
THEM: Oh sure.
Easy right?
I paid for the chair and a few other items got into our Miata and drove home. Veronica looking at the receipt wondered why I paid $259 for a chair marked $219.
Ugh.
So when Number Two son went to go get the chair I went with him, I didn’t want him to have to try and navigate the complications to come.
Part Two Tomorrow.
