freelance 2025…
While maintaining an ancient artifact like a blog is often Radio Nowhere (is there anybody alive out there?) I do know folks read it— because I get responses— had quite a few concerned about the tone of last week’s post.
While I certainly appreciate the kind thoughts and they are always welcome I’m not destined to join the streets next to the woman who screamed her head off at me while I was walking from St V’s hospital to my car a few Saturday night’s ago. I’ve never had someone continue to threaten to kill me from six blocks away— and man did she have some pipes.
Freelance is a tough gig— sometimes it’s salesman tough— because you DO essentially live on commission. Give GLENGARRY GLENN ROSS a watch, it’s a good movie.
Many years ago I went to Japan for an extended period of time— and during that time I had a project that ate up all of my time, so I turned down a lot of work— a lot of it. Then when I got back and that project had ended editors and publishers stopped calling because I had turned down so many things during the gig. At the same time I had signed a long-term contract with a UK Publisher to produce a series of How To Books which would be exclusively distributed through BORDERS ™ Books— boy I loved BORDERS ™ and I never in a million years thought they would go away— although that’s not entirely true— when I signed the gig which would have set me up for years pay wise I decided to dig a little deeper into the health of the company and on a random employee message board I found a lot of disgruntled folks and indications that leadership was probably not where it should be.
Shortly after, BORDERS ™ shuttered and so did the contract.
That’s what has happened here, and like I did during those setbacks I will either bounce back or I’ll take that part time job as a town policeman that I’ve been offered or I’ll takeup with a local design company for a bit. But meanwhile my plan is to do as I said— send out some feelers and see if I can land some good gigs, and you’ll be along for the ride.
