What do you think of the Bond films?

When I was 8-10 I was a really big fan of James Bond. They’d show the Connery films on TV as big Network releases. Roger Moore was the Bond in theaters and he was my guy at that age. I loved the locals of the movies, I loved the gadgets and the gun play– I had zero interest in the love interests and must have either gone to get more popcorn or just zoned out because I never even noticed anything about it.

After reading the books I became a Connery Convert- he was more in line with what Ian Fleming wrote about and in his films from 1963-1967 he was classic, Bond is, in my mind a product of the 60s. The Roger Moore films after THE SPY WHO LOVED ME (1979) became goofy and I couldn’t get into them at all.

George Lazenby played Bond once while Connery took a break, then the series moved on to Moore and then Timothy Dalton for two movies in the late 80s. His first one, THE LIVING DAYLIGHTS was pretty good, and Dalton nailed the Fleming version of Bond who was a cold blooded assassin. His second film was kind of awful.

By the time Pierce Brosnan took over my oldest son got into Bond so I took him to all of those, I liked Brosnan but the scripts were terrible.

Bond took another long break and then they announced blonde Daniel Craig as Bond, he was certainly fit enough to play Bond, but he was an odd choice at first glance, but he made the role his own in CASINO ROYALE. Unfortunately each subsequent Bond film after that first one was a big step down for me to the point that the last one was barely watchable. When they killed Judi Dench as M I really lost interest. Each of those films seemed like the same story over and over again, Bond has gone rogue or given up his 00 status and yadda yada, then they brought in arch villain Blofeld but like Hollywood likes to do that had to give him a personal connection to Bond that just didn’t work for me.

So much like the Batman films I wrote about yesterday, I’m giving up on Bone unless they give the role to Idris Elba, which I don’t think is going to happen.

Rather than be sad they killed a good franchise, I’m happy to have the films I do like.
